The Highlands Plateau

A unique and upscale community, Highlands sits high atop a plateau in the mountains of Western North Carolina 4118 ft. above sea level.  The town was founded in 1875 by two Kansas land developers who, according to folklore, drew a line on the map from New York to New Orleans and another from Chicago to Savannah. The point at which these lines intersected, they believed, would become a major thoroughfare and some day, a great population center. What evolved was the highest incorporated town east of the Rockies known to the well-traveled as a popular summer resort locale with coveted health benefits.

When visitors arrive in Highlands, they are surprised by the amount of charm and culture that exudes from this little town.  Home to the Highlands Playhouse, the oldest theatre in North Carolina, the Martin-Lipscomb Performing Arts Center, The Bascom: A Center for the Visual Arts, and the Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music, residents and visitors alike are exposed to world renowned theatrical performances, musicals and concerts.  If your first love is shopping, Main Street is pedestrian and canine friendly providing a unique and upscale shopping experience offering hours of amazing shopping from quaint boutiques to art galleries, fabulous jewelry, casual outdoor attire and supplies, and even more formal wear.
